Making our community safer

Pacific Region’s President Derek Chin, Vice-President John Randle and William Head Institution Local President Jason Stewart met with the Mayor of Metchosin, John Ranns and the Metchosin Fire Chief Stephanie Dunlop to discuss making his community safer.

In July 2019, two inmates escaped William Head Institution which lead to their charge of first degree murder in late June of 2020 of a Metchosin citizen. Mayor Ranns was quite visibly upset and frustrated with how inmates with a violent history and a higher security level could end up in a minimum institution. Mayor Ranns would like to see improvements on security overrides and criterias developed for inmate placement at William Head Institution to ensure his community is safe.

We have committed to having ongoing dialogue and communication to work with Mayor Ranns to help achieve a safer community. Mayor Ranns also expresses his gratitude for the work of the William Head Correctional Officers and staff.
