This past week marked the first phase of negotiating monetary demands, and we want to provide you with a detailed update on the progress and challenges we faced.
On June 12, both parties exchanged their monetary demands. The Employer presented their demands but refused to provide all details and explanations, stating they would deliver a comprehensive offer at the end of June 13. This lack of transparency was disappointing and did not set a positive tone for the discussions. Despite this, we remained hopeful and prepared to present our case strongly.
On June 13, we presented our monetary demands and provided a thorough explanation for each one. Our monetary package is designed to reflect the increasing difficulty, risk, and violence faced by correctional officers inside federal jails. We believe our demands are fair and necessary to ensure better working conditions and compensation.
At the end of the day on June 13, the Employer delivered their comprehensive offer. As usual, they did not recognize most of our demands and showed little interest in improving our working conditions. Here are the key points from the Employer’s offer:
- The proposed salary increases were far below our expectations and did not reflect the realities of our job.
- There was no substantial offer for risk and hazard pay, failing to acknowledge the dangers we face.
- The Employer did not propose any meaningful enhancements to our benefits package.
- They finally came back on disciplinary issues, but their proposal would be a step back for us.
We closed the day by expressing our disappointment with the Employer’s offer. We emphasized the importance of recognizing the challenging conditions correctional officers face and the need for meaningful improvements in our contract. We expressed our hope that the Employer will be ready to work more collaboratively in September to genuinely improve the working conditions of correctional officers.
On our side, the negotiation committee will be working on a counterproposal during the summer. We will also be touring across the country to meet members, inform you about the negotiation process, and explain both monetary proposals.
We hope to see you in great numbers at these meetings. Your support and involvement are crucial as we continue to push for a fair and beneficial contract.
