Comments of UCCO-SACC-CSN to the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs about the tabled Bill S-230 An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act

Bill S-230 aims to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act in multiple ways that would have serious impacts on how Correctional Service Canada (CSC) accomplishes its mandate of contributing to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens while exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control.

As representatives of the 7,500 correctional officers working in Federal institutions across Canada, the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN) is pleased to share its views on this bill with the honourable members of the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. As law-enforcement professionals, we represent a critical component of CSC, enabling it to achieve its public safety mandate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We hope that the opinions presented in this brief will help the honourable senators make informed and appropriate decisions.
